Choppies was born in 1986 in a Botswana Town called Lobatse. 1993 saw the opening of a second store still in Lobatse. From 1993, Choppies embarked on a great expansion drive, with new stores being opened in the greater Gaborone periphery. The expansion also moved to highly populated geographical areas of Botswana. In 2008, Choppies introduced its footprint into South Africa, opening a store in Zeerust in North West. Another milestone was reached in 2012 with the listing of the Choppies group on the Botswana Stock exchange. As part of our expansion drive, 2013 saw Choppies move into Zimbabwe where most of the Choppies stores were acquisitions of the existing Spar network. The first distribution centers in South Africa and Zimbabwe were opened in 2014. This was followed by a secondary listing on the Johannesburg stock exchange in 2015. Choppies believes in potential of the African market hence the expansion into Zambia and Kenya in 2016 and the opening of stores in Tanzania and Mozambique in 2017. The group is present in 8 Sub Saharan countries, with 250+ supermarkets, operates 11 distribution centres and employees 17 000+ people. The group posted turnover of BWP of 8.9 bn for the financial year ended 30 June 2017. The group’s history is one of phenomenal growth, which is an indication of the future ahead.
